Sherlock Holmes...Meh

I saw Sherlock Holmes and it was an alright film if you just wanted to pop in a DVD for entertainment or just flipping around the channels and find something nice to watch. The movie just didn't cut it for me all the way. I don't blame this on the actors, I just blame it on the idea someone had to change something classic and old school and make it something hip and for the kids.

First of all, in my opinion, Sherlock Holmes is this classy, British detective, who is also a heroin addict (Yes, he is a heroine addict) and to have him show up with messy hair, a wrestler and someone who can kick your ass like James Bond, just didn't really fit. Now Robert Downey, Jr., who plays Holmes, was great and he makes up for the mistakes with just his humour alone. He is great in every role he is in. I just didn't think this movie was thoughtout enough for it to be worthy of the name Holmes. Downey's accent was great and you really do believe him to be British. It's just not the right movie. When I first saw the poster for the movie, I thought to myself, Oh, no. Why are they going to turn something classic into something for the kids? I somehow knew that it wasn't going to be very good in terms of story. And, for the most part I was right and wrong. The advertising campaign just turned me off completely and it told me that this was going to be just a money maker and not a worthy movie of fans of the past.

Rachel McAdams, whom I wasn't sure if she was supposed to be British or not (due to having no accent) wasn't really needed in the story and I think it would have been much better if played by Nicole Kidman, or something who can fit in that English genre. There were parts that just seemed so unreal, but I guess that goes with the fantasy of it.

On the bright side, the sets were pretty elaborate and amazing and you really felt like you were in the times of Holmes and Watson.

To end this long-ass essay, I would just like to say that I was surprised to see this done by Guy Richie, the guy behind snatch. I didn't feel his vibe in this movie at all, but it cerainly is unique in that there is not a crapload of CGI unlike every movie (except Star Trek) is like nowadays.
